Hangul Diaries by Minae Kim

Hangul was invented by King Sejong in the 15th Century and it became the official and native script of Korea. Hangul comprises of 24 letters, 14 consonants and 10 vowels. It is known to be one of the easiest languages to learn. Its rising global popularity is  thanks to South Korea's export of its KPop and the Kdrama Culture.

Korean language is fascinating yet very complex. It has three major forms or simply put, it is divided into three categories Polite, Informal and Speech. The Polite form is used for older people, strangers and colleagues. The Informal form is used for the younger generation, same age group and with friends. Speech is Honorific . It is used in formal occasions and functions. The Koreans have strict notions of etiquette and gradations of rank. Education is highly valued in Korea and the respect for their scholars is displayed and exhibited in their culture, monuments and statues found all over Korea. The Korean Government has taken upon itself a mammoth task to invest heavily in education.

The Korean language is  growing globally. It is now a new normal to use  the Kdrama phrases and cute heart emojis and I love you gestures in everyday life. The Korean language has gained Global recognition and its due credit rightfully goes to the rising popularity of the Kpop and Kdrama culture.

So why should travellers learn Korean before visiting South Korea we ask Mr Kang?

He answers very passionately. "When you first arrive in Korea, and see the Korean word structure and its basic letters for the first time it can be very disorienting. During your first few days you would likely require the services of a taxi or a public transport system. Maybe you just may want to order food in a restaurant.  So if you are familiar with the names of few dishes and some basic restaurant phrases  you could ease your way into the system.  Learning the basics for these two tasks will go a long way in making your first week easier. Learn the words  ‘left’, ‘right’, ‘school’, ‘station’, ‘pull-over please’ etc. and suddenly, taking a taxi will be a lot less daunting. This, combined with the ability to read Korean will open up the country to you. Without  learning and speaking  you are limited to spending your time in areas that are only Tourist friendly.  Most people who can speak Korean can get off the beaten track and visit places like Andong and Ulleungdo which are not only beautiful and unique but also very difficult to reach. Learning the Korean language can help you understand the Korean people in a more meaningful way. So if you plan to travel, stay in Korea or are simply passionate about BTS Hangul is a perfect starting point for appreciating the Korean Culture.”

Learning a new language may be overwhelming but keep at it and it will help you  improve your memory and critical thinking skills. It will help you multitask and super charge your brain. Come open your doorway to wisdom..
